CHAPTER 9

Sniper Fire!

For a moment the group looked at each other in shocked silence. "Could that mean he's still alive?" Stan cried.

"Maybe," said Frank. "But it could also mean that Jack is dead, or that the dolphin simply found this watch somewhere and Jack is long gone."

"I'm with Stan," Joe said optimistically. "I think Maile found Jack, and he sent his watch back so that we'd bring help."

Frank handed the watch back to Dr. Cho and then turned to watch the dolphins frolic in the lagoon. "If only they could talk-we could ask them," he said.

Dr. Cho agreed. "Unfortunately, we're only at the point where we can talk to them, and not vice versa. We're miles away from understanding their communication, which simply proves how great their intelligence is. They can understand us, but we can't understand them!"

"I just know it means Jack is alive," Stan insisted. "And that he's in danger! Otherwise, he'd come back on his own."

"Let's hope we see some sign of him when we go out," Joe put in. "If he is alive, we're bound to find him at some point."

"Which reminds me," said Stan. "I tried getting the speedboat started before you got here. It's not working right. The thing stalls as soon as I put it in gear.

"Can't we rent one from Uncle Billy?" Joe asked.

Stan's face lit up. "That's a great idea. His shop's probably closed by now, but we can call him at home and set it up. He lives right next door to the shop. It shouldn't be a problem."

"So that's settled. Meanwhile, I'd better put in a call to Jerry on his ship-to-shore phone," said Cho. "He must be worried about Maile."

Frank remembered the set of prints he had with him. "Since you're going back there," he said to Dr. Cho, "can we ask you a favor? Can we use your fax machine to send something to a friend of ours back home in Bayport?"

"No problem," said Cho. "It sounds important."

"It is," said Frank. He knew now was the time to share his suspicions about Jack with Dr. Cho. it wouldn't be a pleasant conversation, but he had to let the director know the track he and Joe were on.

While Stan and Joe went to call Uncle Billy, Frank went with Dr. Cho to her office. The director switched on the lights and the fax machine, and then put in a quick call to Finski. From the part of the conversation Frank overheard, he could tell the researcher had been worried about Maile and was relieved to know the dolphin was okay.

"Jerry's coming in tomorrow to pick her up," Dr. Cho said when she was off the phone. "He said he was about to use his tracking system to locate Maile when I called."

Frank pulled out the sheet of fingerprints he'd taken from Jack's coffee mug. "Here's what I want to fax," he told Dr. Cho.

Cho took the paper from him and dialed the number Frank had written down. "You
